JKR has reclaimed some of the cliffs around Blue Hole for rappelling and rock climbing! Our LIT campers will be the first to experience them from this generation of campers! LITs will also embark on an overnight river trip in kayaks or canoes, spending the night under the stars of a river campsite. The Leaders in Training program is also aimed at preparing campers to become Junior Counselors, and Summer Staff. For more detailed information about any of our Leaders in Training Camps, or to ask questions, please drop us a line.
Note: Scholarships are available. A scholarship application will be e-mailed to you once you have registered your camper.
Realizing that families have different abilities to pay, JKR this year has instituted a voluntary three-tier fee program. You many choose the tier that is most suitable for your family’s budget. It is really an honor system. All campers receive the same experience no matter what they pay!! For those families who cannot afford Tier 1 we have financial assistance through our scholarship program. We want to ensure that every child who wants to come to camp can come.
Tier I is our historically subsidized rate and does not reflect the true cost of operating summer camp programs.
Tier II is our partially subsidized fee for those who can pay a little more but still cannot afford the actual cost of camp.
Tier III more closely accounts for the true costs of camp, including wear and tear of facilities and grounds.
Note: Scholarships funds are available. A scholarship application will be e-mailed to you once you have registered your camper. Alternatively please call the office for more details.
LIT1 campers use John Knox Ranch as home base, then venture out to explore the Texas Hill Country.
The Backpack Adventure Camp takes campers to Colorado (near Duncan Park; you get to FLY!) for a 4 day/3night hike through the glorious Rocky Mountains and the Roosevelt National Forest. JKR partners with the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas for this trip, utilizing their train guides and expertise from their Colorado site and facilities. Campers are challenged mentally as well as physically, so a measure of fitness and maturity is required for this trip.
Campers will meet at John Knox Ranch on Saturday, June 30th. On Sunday, they will fly from San Antonio to Denver. After two days at Duncan Park spent acclimating to the altitude and learning back country tips and etiquette, the group will hike into the mountains for adventure. Carrying all necessary items in backpacks and traversing mountain streams can be tough, but the views and the feeling of accomplishment make it all worthwhile!
Campers return to San Antonio on Saturday, July 7. Pickup will be at JKR at 4:00 p.m., or at 2:00 p.m. at the San Antonio airport.
LIT 2 campers spend two (2) weeks at JKR enjoying the ranch and some of our new activities (rappelling and rock climbing) and delving deeper into what it means to be a servant leader. LIT 2 participants hone their leadership skills by shadowing Junior Counselors at Day Camp, by helping lead activities, and by reflecting on what makes a good leader (and how that applies to life and faith). There is no pre-requisite for participating in LIT 2.
