Spend some time in quiet reflection by walking our labyrinth, an ancient spiritual practice of prayer and meditation. A labyrinth is not a maze; it is a journey inward to the center of things, and then outward to the world around us.

Wet a line in Carper’s Creek or the Blanco River, and try your hand at catching perch, largemouth bass, and even catfish. JKR observes a “catch and release” policy, so please do not plan on having our fish for supper! $5 per person if you use our equipment.

Explore the 300 acres of John Knox Ranch by hiking our extensive trails. There are hikes possible for all levels of fitness, from ones on level ground to others that are a bit more strenuous and lengthy. Maps are available at the JKR Office.

Take a dip in the pleasant waters of the Blanco River! Enjoy the shade and comfort of our swimming area, complete with a limestone deck and benches. No lifeguard is required for swimming in the river; guests swim at their own risk.

A favorite game of JKR Summer Campers, Gaga is a modified game of dodge ball, and combines dodging, striking, running and jumping with the object of hitting one’s opponents below the knees while avoiding being hit. Gaga can be played by groups of individual players, teams, and in one-on-one matches. A playground ball is available from the JKR Office.

Nets and volleyballs are available for your group to use.

Campfires are permitted in designated campfire rings located throughout the JKR property. Please check with your host as to whether or not JKR is under a burn ban. Wood is provided, though you may scavenger for your own if you would like!

The Blue Hole is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views. This 30 foot deep, spring-fed swimming hole is full of crystal clear water and stays a constant 72 degrees. Magnificent 35-foot high limestone cliffs and a seasonal waterfall surround this area. Swimming allowed; $25/hour lifeguard charge per every 10 swimmers.

The Cistern Tower is located just above the Ranch House. It is a 20-foot high lookout platform with benches next to the windmill. The tower is an ideal place to sit, relax, and watch the sun set.

The trailhead is located just above the bridge crossing of Carper’s Creek. The bridge itself is part of an old railway car. The trailhead is the start of four marked trails that vary in length. All of the trails lead to undeveloped areas of the ranch. Maps and written guides are available at the office or from your host.

John Knox Ranch’s outdoor chapel rests on the edge of a bluff that drops down sharply to Carper's Creek. The chapel offers outstanding views and is a beautiful place for meditation and worship.

The 30-foot high observation tower is located on one of the highest points of the ranch. It provides spectacular views of the entire ranch and beyond. It is also a great place to watch the sunrise or sunset.

The fossil beds are located on the Dinosaur Dig hiking trail (see the Trail Map for directions). This area reveals fossils 105 million years old from an exposed coral reef.
